What DEI Is & Why It Matters

DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—a guiding framework for building a community where everyone feels welcome, has fair access to opportunities, and can fully participate in civic life. It’s not a buzzword. It’s a set of values that helps cities like Ellensburg grow with purpose, compassion, and integrity.

Why It Matters for Ellensburg

1. It Builds Trust & Strengthens Community

When people see their stories reflected in leadership, policy, and public spaces, they feel a sense of ownership and belonging. DEI helps foster that connection—making our city stronger and more united.

2. It Leads to Better Decisions

Communities thrive when decision-makers listen to a broad range of voices. Inclusive processes uncover blind spots and lead to policies that work better for more people.

3. It Advances Justice and Opportunity

Equity is about recognizing and addressing real disparities—in housing, education, access to services, and more. It’s about creating a city where your zip code, background, or identity doesn’t determine your future.

4. It Creates a Culture of Belonging

When people feel welcome and safe—regardless of who they are—they’re more likely to engage, invest, and stay. DEI isn’t just about representation; it’s about building a shared future we all want to be part of.

AS YOUR CITY COUNCIL MEMBER, I WILL:

  • Review city policies through an equity lens—to ensure decisions actively reduce disparities and include diverse perspectives.
  • Promote inclusive engagement—so that public meetings, surveys, and planning processes are accessible and welcoming to all.
  • Support partnerships with local schools, cultural groups, and nonprofits—to expand education, training, and leadership opportunities.
  • Push for transparency and accountability—by advocating for clear DEI goals and regular progress updates.

This Is Personal

As an immigrant from Ireland, being welcomed into this community has meant so much to me. Getting to read the City’s proclamation declaring March as Irish Heritage Month was one of the proudest moments I’ve experienced in public life. It affirmed that Ellensburg is a place where people from different backgrounds can feel seen and celebrated.

I want to raise my children in a city that embraces all of who they are—not just parts.

A city where no one has to shrink who they are to belong.

Where your culture, your voice, and your experiences are valued—not just tolerated, but genuinely welcomed.

That’s what DEI is about: creating space for everyone to be fully themselves, and to thrive.

Ellensburg is a wonderful place. Let’s keep working to ensure it’s welcoming, fair, and inclusive—for everyone.
